Artemus is an Indie/Pop musician from Dallas, Texas whose influences are heavily rooted in the 70’s and 80’s. Namely Genesis, The Police, and Phil Collins directly. Artemus’s own songs range from the quiet ballads about relationships growing apart (Phases) to synth-pop stylized tracks that throwback to glory days the 80’s (Somewhere in the Dark), the one thing you will find time and again is that the lyrics speak from a deep well in his earnest soul.
The offspring of a musical family, his passion for music is almost a birthright. His father, Art Senior, a guitar player and luthier, spent years convincing him to play guitar, but all little Artemus wanted was to be a drummer. And it was as a drummer that I met Artemus in a hole in the wall bar in coppell texas, drumming and singing in his band Another Year Colder.
Wearing a fastball T-shirt and absolutely nailing a cover of clocks by Coldplay, Art had won over the hearts and minds of the crowd. Myself included. From this chance booking of our two bands together on the same show in 2009 a fast friendship was born.
While my band, and career as a bass player, disintegrated like a Space X rocket, Art would go on to pursue his dreams of making music and performing In front of ever larger audiences.
A decade later I got to attend a Pure Collins show at Lava Cantina in The Colony Texas. Pure Collins being the Phil Collins cover band that Art launched after a late night jam session at an ‘innacord’ afterparty where I joked he should start a cover band called Faux Collins (we later learned the name was already in use).
Artemus has been many things to many people and all of them have been positive influences. For a time his dad owned a guitar shop in Grand Prairie where one could record music in the back room. A lot of late nights were spent noodling around on song ideas. He day jobbed at a popular hotel chain. And worked in party bands and session settings for friends bands. Keeping his toe in the water looking for opportunities all over.
It’s that determination and grind that left the biggest impression on me. Seeing his bands get booked at Lava Cantina, Texas Live, and Granada Theater all seem like overnight success but is in reality the product of hundreds of tiny shows in wing bars, coffee shops, and even a poolside birthday party.
In 2020 Artemus was the first guest on Little Gain Podcast and that episode is live on Spotify.
Artemus stops by to play three new tracks for us.
